The North Street Veterans Playground will be closed for renovation between July 2013 and June 2014.
Grant Award: In January 2013, the City of Somerville Parks and Open Space Department was awarded a $400,000 PARC Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation Services, allowing this park renovation to proceed.
Our team of landscape architects is completing the final construction plans now, the project will go out for bid in the Spring, and Construction is scheduled to start in July 2013.
To date several community meetings have been held and a "preferred plan" can be reviewed below. The Final Plans will be posted on the City Website prior to construction.
The new park will include a 4,500 square feet expansion incorporating an easement from the Somerville Housing Authority. Improvements will include new entrances and pathways, lighting, security cameras, a water feature, rubber safety surfacing, hills with trees, and spaces for a variety of age groups. Play features include half court basketball, play structures, musical components, swings, slides, and separate spaces for toddlers and older children.
Community partners who have provided essential input include Ward 7 Neighborhood residents, Groundwork Somerville and the Urban Family Outreach Squad, the Wayside Youth and Family Support Network, the Somerville Housing Authority, and the Somerville Police Department.
